I am still a child, looking at this extraordinary world with round eyes. There is so much I must learn; everything arouses my curiosity. I have only one interest, and that is to know more about life, past and present, and to write about it. I would not like fame if it gets in the way.

CELL Creative Writing Studio

Introduction

The Creative Writing Studio of College of English Language and Literature was established in April, 2017. Gathering students who have passions in writing creatively ad libitum, the workshop provides lectures and seminars for our young working artists to learn and hone their crafts in bringing emotions, experience, and thinking into words. In our studio, a student writer goes through:

l  Monthly courses on creative writing

l  One-on-one consultations with mentors

l  Language enhancing sessions with English-speaking teachers

l  Producing an annual student anthology and conference

Throughout the first year, the Creative Writing Studio has provided the following lectures:

l  April, 2017. Why Do We Need Creative Writing?—An Introduction to Creative Writing. Lectured by Tina Zhang

l  May, 2017. The Basic Principles of Writing Creatively. Lectured By Tina Zhang

l  June, 2017.  A Seminar on Revising the First Writing Projects. Lectured By John Glasheen

l  October, 2017. The Powerful Language That Kills. Lectured by Lisa Wen

l  November, 2017. Beyond Sentences. Lectured by Ma, Ping.

l  December, 2017. A Writer’s Decisions—Theme and Structure. Lectured by Amy Wu.

Our young writers have labored through drafts on their writing projects, through which they have picked up skills to create odes to memorable things in life, personal stories as dancing between reality and fantasy, short poetry to channel their strong yet unshaped flux of emotions, and narrative essays that reason about shebang in growth. The first collection of works in our Student Anthology 2017 includes:

l  An Ode to Nothing, by Li, Gefei

l  Tream, by Li, Gefei

l  I Roamed Lonely As A Breeze, by Yang, Li

l  My Girl, by Sun, Jiahong

l  A Group of Poetry, By Tan, Siqi (in Chinese)

l  Three Hours and Fifteen Minutes, by Jiang, Zhaoqing

l  Footprints, by Zhao, Yucong

l  The Most Beautiful Flower, by Song, Shanshan

l  A True Lady, by Chen, Kuankuan

l  Lost, by Yin, Huali

l  Annual Ring of Book List, by Luo, Yuan

l  The Door, by Lian, Jiaqi

As one of our writers wrote, “It is always painstaking to find the right words or structure for what I have at the back of my mind. Though I have not found my current work most satisfying, the pleasing pain in the process is worth the effort.” If such an experience is what you are looking for, you are welcome to join us.
